Sergeant Jones was just a successful career soldier, serving in the RAF Regiment,
until a fateful night two and a half years ago. While out on patrol with a group of
three others on Salisbury Plain one night, Jones (who was driving) was startled to
see a bright light descending some two miles away, near the ruins of an abandoned
village on the MOD range.
It was too large to be a flare; it did not look like any weapon system any of the Rock
Apes were familiar with. Jones checked with control, who stated they had no radar
contact with the object; he was ordered to investigate.
As they approached the scene of the light source it became apparent that it was
about 60' wide and 15' high, and appeared to be a classic 'flying saucer' glowing white,
hovering 15' above the ground. Jones pulled the landy into the cover of a ruined
barn, and the fire team disembarked.
It was Parker, comms man, who first saw the occupants. Three tiny grey humanoids,
about 4' high, with large heads, were scuttling about amidst the ruins of a cottage
some distance off. White and Barker moved out to investigate, and Jones and
Parker moved round to get a better view of the craft.
Jones was standing next to Parker one moment; the next the man had dissolved in
a white beam which issued forth from the saucer, apparently melted out of existence.
Only Jones' reflexes saved him; he combat rolled into a rusting pig sty, kicked out
the far end and scrambled over to the landrover.
Meanwhile, White and Barker were in full retreat, Barker being dragged by White.
One of the Greys had shot him with a 'blaster' type weapon, and he was paralysed
from the waist up. He regained feeling in his upper body only as Jones accelerated
away...
The report they made on their return was honest and truthful, and days of intensive
questioning while shut in a high security facility at a top secret location did not help
things. Barker had lost it; his sanity has snapped, and he was discharged for medical
reasons into a very nice private mental asylum, paid for by the RAF. White was less
fortunate; his nerves shattered, insistent that the world must know the truth about
the alien menace, he was subjected to weeks of 'psychitric evaluation' and when he
was released was discharged on medical grounds.
White subsequently hit the bottle, and hit it hard. Last Jones knew he was down
and out and living rough in West Wales.
Jones stayed; he was tougher, and more willing to accept that whatever happened
could have more causes than met the eye. He was eventually briefed by an RAF
Top Brass with an interest in Ufology, Sir R. R was an aged man, but very kind
and thoughtful, and seemed genuinely concerned about the fate of Parker, officially
killed in an explosion at a munitions dump. No body was ever recovered, and R
hinted that he felt it quite possible Parker was still alive... somewhere.
R reached an agreement with Jones; Jones kept his mouth shut, and if any chance
ever came up to avenge his colleagues or learn more about the nature of the so
called 'UFO' phenomenon, Jones would be there. Sir R has since died, but that
is how Jones was recruited into C23.
