Cassandra 23: A Midsummer Night's Dreaming

June 24th, 2000 - South West England and the Dreamlands...

These pages contains photographs taken during the third C23 mission, part of the ongoing Cassandra 23 Cthulhu Live game we are running this year. Eventually we hope to have a full account of the game from Agent Alex Rothwell (Peter Clark).

This is the second of two films taken in 'A Midsummer Night's Dreaming'. The page will shortly be updated with the remaining photographs!

Brief Plot Synopsis

Contacted as always by Mr J the team were asked to investigate the disappearance of a useful contact, the Comte St. Graal. Shortly after making contact with J and before the briefing could commence J also vanished - the only clues to both disappearances being that a Corn Dolly was left behind in each case, and the Comte was afraid of a local witch called Prudence...

The remaining nine hours of the game saw the Team contact a large number of local occultists, discover a thousand year old tale of romance, betrayal and magick and finally open a Trod Alex's full report should be available by the 1st July together with the remaining photographs...

Some way in, the Team contact one of the Comte St.Graal's final contacts, the spirit medium Madame Arcana...

They attempt a physical seance to contact the spirit of the comte's ancestor, Sir Robert de Langton.
'Sing to help raise the energy' urges Madame Arcana. Then the eerie singing began - 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas!'. It was really unsettling, being so completely out of context - in June at a seance in pitch blackness. The photos were taken with a flash...

The ghost of Sir Robert appeared after the Team were briefly entertained by Arcana's spirit guide, Running Deer. It was a tense moment (remember it was pitch black... the flash from the camera gave the only light...)

An hour or so after the Seance, after seeing a ghostly monk in a graveyard and digging up a fairy artifact from a cursed burial mound, the Team finally meets Prudence - and strikes a deal... A deal which resulted in them helping her return physically to the Dreamlands, and entering themselves...
Incidentally the Keeper's have no idea what caused the light effect, as the Teams torches had been taken from them. Perhaps magical energy produced as a side effect of opening the gate?

'By a tree by a brook there's a songbird who sings!'
The Songbird requested that each member of the Team who would pass sing her a song.
Amazingly they all managed it! We had German songs, 'Show Me The Way to Go Home!', 'Happy Birthday!' and many more of your all time faves... and of course a reprise of 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas!'

'If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now...'
The May Queen demanded the mightiest warrior's weapon, a joke, and a kiss to allow them to pass down the Faerie Trod. Intrepid Private Eye Bryan Lowe strayed off the path and was lost trying unsucessfully to kiss the seductive May Queen...

'The Piper's calling you to join him!'
They third guardian of the Trod proved the most dangerous. His request was simple; he would play for them, and they must dance to his tune...

Cue: Six investigators and a Faerie Princess performing a mad five minute circle dance to Grieg's 'In the Hall of the Mountain King'. Result: utter exhaustion and giddiness!

They managed to make it all the way down the Trod to the Court of Dark Summer, where they encountered the Faeries led by the King and Queen. In the celebrations over the return of prudence they managed to free the prisoners, including Lowe. Unfortunately the Faeries noticed, killed Agent Luke Hurl with a well placed sword blow and gave chase.

And on their return they lost Charles Montgomery and the Comte St.Graal to a servant of the Faeries Goddess!

Hopefully some of the photographs will give you an inkling of how terrifying the 15' tall monster built by Kevin Todd and myself actually was!

This is a description of a 'murder mystery' type live action roleplaying game, and in no ways implies any interest or belief in the Occult, Faeries or Espionage. It's just a game chaps!
