The Open Day

A Freeform for Fallcon 2002 set in the magical worlds of contemporary Childrens Literature
(& Harry Whatshisname...)

Player Introduction

Plot Synopsis
It's open day at the most prestigious magical university in all of Britain, John Dee University, and hordes of young wizards and witches from all of the best schools have arrived to try and gain places on it's exclusive courses, which almost guarantee a brilliant career in the ministry of magic. The open day involves the potential students being split in to groups, and asked to then perform some simple magical tests. Each student will be asked to perform one spell, to demonstrate ability.

But as Professor Exemptus always says, it's not just about spells. Real magic is in the person: so at the end of the open day the students will have to vote for who should be allowed in, and who not, and you can't vote for yourself. There are only 4 places and 12 potential students, so competition is bound to be stiff, and backstabbing, treachery and guile likely…

You all get a character who is one of the applicants to the most secret university in the world. Many of you are ex-Hogwarts, but others come from other magical schools. There are NO muggles here, and only one muggle born student has ever made the grade and been accepted, possibly owing to the influence of Slytherin the Founder of Hogwarts on the original creation of John Dee University…

How the Game works
OK, take your character sheet, read it, tell no-one what is on it unless told to by the referee, and become that person. You have a set of goals to achieve, so try and achieve them. If you achieve all of them and are accepted in to the University you win - and more than one person can win, in fact you are more likely to win as part of a team. So talk to other characters, make deals, etc. The game takes one and a half hours, hopefully you will find plenty to do! There are lots of subplots, and if you achieve all your goals you can work on selecting who to help and who to stop from the other characters.

You have been at the open day all day, and have already performed your magic test and been interviewed, and shown around. Now your magic powers are weak, but you have one last hurdle to overcome - you are about to be introduced to the other students, and have the infamous 'meet and discuss' - and in just over two hours you all vote for one student you think should be admitted. The four with the most votes get places, the rest are turned away. So you need to make friends… and fast!

Using Magic
You are a wizard (or witch) so magic is easy! Unfortunately your powers are drained, and you can only cast four more spells today. Which spells you can still cast and how powerful they are is down to luck - the referee will give you four playing cards, and these represent your spells. When you cast a spell on someone, or use it to counter someone's spell, it is used up and you must give the card to the referee. So use spells wisely....

Full magic rules are given later on this site (or will be when I've finished rewriting them!) and on the back of each character sheet is a brief guide!
