This is the Court of Earl Math ap Eiluned, and is situated at Mistley on the coast of North Essex. During the winter season it is ruled by his Regent, Diana. Count Math reintroduced the ancient cycle of Seelie/Unseelie here, and he rules over the Seelie summer half of the year.
The heraldic arms of the court of Essex are three red scimitars on a black field, though the origins of this symbol are lost in the depths of history.
The former Countess, Moritilla Ashcroft, was assasinated by a cold iron dagger during the Battle of Wandlebury, possibly by one of her own court. The matter is stilll unresolved.
Lady Moritilla was a rabidly enthusiastic Parliamentarian, and has given to making short but emotional speeches about freedom and fate. She also took to dressing in black and looking as if she was preparing for funeral in the weeks before her death. She had never previously shown much interest in politics until just before the Civil War broke out.
After her death a will was discovered, bequeathing her County to Lord Math, who had never previously met her. This was odd to say the least...
The County of Essex has long since lost control of the coastal region round Southend and Braintree, lost to banality, and the London looking southern regions. North Essex however remains essentially a shire of sunken lanes and tiny villages, with eerie nights and misty days. Witch legends cluster here.
